GIDE Shrinking Cities-Exhibit: E-Library

Welcome to the E-Library at 42 New Briggate, Leeds...

The intent of the E-Library is to highlight the current issue of decline in reading and of book purchasing and to help encourage, especially the younger generation to read, regardless of what the content is. The E-Library allows readers to use electronic reading devices such as Apple iPads, and Amazon Kindles to read electronic books (e-books), which are becoming increasingly popular nowadays. The use of technology would hopefully encourage, in particular the younger generation to read.

The design is based on the physical properties of books- the pages, the folded corners to mark a page etc. The idea is to surround the user with these elements, highlighting the irony of the concept: Knowledge is Power, Ignorance is Bliss. Those who feel they don't need to read or don't feel that reading is important, it is ironic that the space they've walked into encloses them in a book environment.

At the E-Library you can read book reviews, start e-book clubs, have a drink whilst reading the news or spend a quiet lunch time from work. Hopefully after spending some time in the E-Library, you will have learnt something you didn't know before you walked in. :)
